Why We're Going All-In on Shopify: Bringing Explainable Predictions to E-Commerce

We built Xplainable to make machine learning transparent. Now we're bringing that transparency to the merchants and agencies who need it most.

Every Shopify merchant knows the feeling. You open your dashboard, see a spike in orders, and wonder: will these customers come back? Which ones are about to disappear? And that 20% discount you ran last week, did it actually bring in new revenue, or did you just give margin away to people who would have bought anyway?

These aren't hypothetical questions. They're the daily reality for the 4.8 million active Shopify stores worldwide, and especially for the agencies managing dozens of them.

Today, we're announcing that Xplainable is going all-in on e-commerce. We've built a Shopify-native integration that connects directly to your store data and builds transparent predictive models that don't just tell you what will happen, but why.

The Problem With Predictions That Don't Explain Themselves

Predictive analytics isn't new to e-commerce. Klaviyo gives you a churn risk score. Tresl segments your customers. Lifetimely projects lifetime value. These tools are useful, but they all share the same limitation: they give you an answer without showing their reasoning.

Great. But why? Is this customer price-sensitive? Have they stopped opening emails? Did their last delivery take too long? Without knowing the reason behind a prediction, you can't take the right action.

This is the gap we set out to close.

What Makes Xplainable Different

Xplainable was built from the ground up around a simple idea: every prediction should come with a reason, and every reason should point to an action.

When Xplainable tells you a customer has a 78% chance of churning, it also tells you that price sensitivity contributed +31%, inactivity over 42 days contributed +22%, and low email engagement added +14%. Now you know exactly what lever to pull. A 15% targeted offer for this specific customer could reduce their churn risk by 23%.

No other tool in the Shopify ecosystem does this. Not Klaviyo, not Triple Whale, not Pecan AI. We checked.

Why E-Commerce, Why Now

Three trends convinced us that e-commerce is the right vertical at the right time.

1. Acquisition costs are climbing, retention is where the money is.

Customer acquisition costs have risen 16% year over year in e-commerce. Acquiring a new customer now costs five to seven times more than keeping an existing one. A 5% improvement in retention can boost profits by 25 to 95%. Merchants who can predict and prevent churn will win.

2. Discount strategies are bleeding margin.

Roughly 60% of online consumers actively wait for discounts before buying. A 30% discount on a 45% margin product cuts profit per unit by 67%. Yet most merchants still use blanket promotions because they have no way to know which customers actually need a discount to convert. The ones who would have paid full price? They take the discount too.

Transitioning from blanket to targeted discounting increases gross margin per order by 15 to 20 percentage points.

3. The data is already there.

Shopify's API provides rich order, customer, product, and checkout data going back years. Layer in Klaviyo's behavioural data (email engagement, browse behaviour, cart events) and you have everything a model needs to make accurate, individual-level predictions. No data warehouse required. No CSV uploads. Just an OAuth install.

What We've Built

Xplainable for Shopify connects directly to your store and Klaviyo data through a single OAuth install. No tags, no pixels, no data pipelines.

Once connected, the platform auto-trains on up to 24 months of order history. Your first models are typically ready in under 15 minutes.

Here's what you can do from day one:

  • Churn prediction with per-customer reasons. Not risk buckets. Actual probabilities with feature-by-feature breakdowns showing why each customer scored the way they did.

  • Discount sensitivity modelling. See which customers would buy at full price, which need a nudge, and which aren't worth the offer. Stop eroding margin on customers who don't need convincing.

  • Win-back prioritisation. Rank lapsed customers by predicted responsiveness and cost-to-recover. Send a reminder to customers who just need a nudge and an incentive to those who need a reason to come back.

  • Repeat purchase forecasting. Predict who will order again in the next 30 days with transparent confidence scores.

  • Demand forecasting. Per-SKU 14 and 30 day demand predictions that account for seasonality and campaigns.

Every prediction writes back to the tools you already use: Shopify Flow, customer tags, Klaviyo properties, Meta audiences, and Google Ads.

Built for Agencies

We designed Xplainable for Shopify with agencies in mind. If you manage multiple Shopify stores for clients, you can:

The Bigger Picture

E-commerce predictive analytics is a $3.1 billion market growing at 26% annually. But roughly 70% of the tools in the space are purely descriptive (they tell you what happened). About 20% are predictive (they tell you what will happen). Perhaps 10% are prescriptive (they tell you what to do about it).

Virtually 0% provide genuine prediction-level explainability: the specific reasons why each prediction was made.

That's the gap Xplainable fills. We believe the next wave of e-commerce intelligence isn't about more dashboards or fancier charts. It's about giving merchants and agencies the confidence to act on predictions because they can see exactly why the model made each call.
